世界ペンギンの日は、南極のマクマード基地でアデリーペンギンの季節的移動が観察されたことをきっかけに始まりました。現在は4月25日に、アデリーペンギンに限らず、ペンギンの生態や絶滅危機、環境保護の重要性を広める国際的な記念日として世界中で啓発活動が行われています。
どんな動物？
海を泳ぐ鳥の仲間。体の色は、背中が黒く、おなかが白い。足が短く見えて、体をまっすぐにして歩く。海を上手に泳いで、魚やイカ、プランクトンを食べる。最小はコビトペンギン（フェアリーペンギン）で約４０㎝、最大はコウテイペンギンで１００～１３０cm。
