この日は、カメに思いをいたし、カメに対する知識と敬意を高め、カメの生存と繁栄のための人類の行動を促すことを目的として、2000年に米国カメ保護会（American Tortoise Rescue）によって制定された記念日です。
どんな動物？
カメは、硬い甲羅を持つ爬虫類の仲間です。陸に生息するリクガメ、水中で生活するウミガメやヌマガメなど、多様な種類が存在します。寿命が非常に長いことで知られ、種類によっては100年以上生きるものもいます。多くのカメは雑食性ですが、種類によって植物食や肉食など食性が異なります。危険を感じると甲羅の中に手足を引っ込めることで身を守ります。

ちなみに、「World Turtle Day🄬」という名称は、は、カリフォルニア州マリブのスーザン・テレムによって商標登録されていますが、「世界カメの日」という日本語の名称は、日本での商標登録はありません。
