この記念日は、国際自然保護連合（IUCN）の霊長類専門家グループ「テナガザル部門」によって2015年に制定されました。霊長類のなかでも特に絶滅の危機に瀕しているテナガザルの現状を広く知らせ、保全・保護活動への意識向上を目的としています。世界各地の動物園などで、テナガザルに関する啓発活動が行われる日です。
