世界カバの日は毎年2月15日に祝われる日で、カバの窮状に対する認識を高め、この絶滅危惧種の保護活動を促進することを目的としています。この日の正確な起源は明確に記録されていませんが、ジンバブエにあるTurgwe Hippo Trust（カバの自然生息地での保護と研究に専念する先駆的な保護プロジェクト）の開設記念日に合わせて設定されたと考えられています。

カバの個体数は115,000から130,000頭と推定されており、密猟、淡水へのアクセス喪失、機械化農業、都市化などにより減少しています。国際自然保護連合（IUCN）は、過去20年間でカバの個体数が最大20%減少したことを受けて、2006年にカバを絶滅危惧種（脆弱種）に指定しました。
