When the rule of the Habsburg Monarchy began at the end of the 17th century, Orthodox believers were forbidden to live in Petrovaradin on the right bank of the Danube, which led many Serbians to move to the left bank. Consequently, a new town was founded on the left bank in 1694. It was initially called "The City of Serbians" but the name "Novi Sad" eventually took hold, and in 1748, it acquired the status of a Free Royal City.
During the 18th and 19th centuries, Novi Sad became one of the largest Serbian communities in the world. In 1817, the linguist Vuk Karadžić called it the "largest Serbian municipality in the world." Novi Sad was the political and cultural center for Serbians and was referred to as the "Serbian Athens" due to its influence.
After World War I, Novi Sad was incorporated into the Kingdom of Serbia as part of the Vojvodina region, and through a constitutional change in 1929, it became part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. It was annexed by the Kingdom of Hungary in 1941 but returned to Yugoslavia after World War II. Following the dissolution of Yugoslavia, Novi Sad became part of the Republic of Serbia.
During the Kosovo War in 1999, NATO conducted air strikes on Serbia, which resulted in the destruction of Novi Sad's bridges and facilities, significantly impacting the lives of its citizens.
