The Ad Deir (Monastery) is a colossal building carved out of rock in the ancient city of Petra, Jordan. Probably carved in the mid-1st century AD, it is one of the most iconic monuments within the Petra Archaeological Park. The monument sits high on a hill in the northwest of the city center of Petra. It is one of the most visited sites in Petra, second only to the Treasury (Khazneh) in popularity.
Architecturally, the Ad Deir follows the Nabataean style, which is a fusion of Hellenistic and Mesopotamian architectural forms. The columns are built in an abstract Corinthian style, and it is thought they were incorporated as an aesthetic element, despite the columns not being structurally necessary for support as in Hellenistic architecture. The entire façade features a Doric entablature, but the metopes (the decorative band between the triglyphs) are aniconic, featuring simple circular patterns instead of imagery.
l-Khazneh is a beautiful structure in the ancient Jordanian city of Petra, also known as the Treasury. Like other buildings in the ancient city, Al-Khazneh was carved out of the sandstone rock. It is particularly known for its elaborate design, which shows the influence of ancient Greek architecture.
The Mesopotamian influence can be seen in the single large entrance and the window-like recesses in the façade. The door to the monument's main chamber is 8 meters tall, and it is the only entryway that brings light into the structure. The presence of square towers on both sides of the monument also points to Mesopotamian influence.

It flourished as the capital city of the Nabataeans, characterized by its trade and water management system. Since the rocky fortress area made agriculture difficult, the Nabataeans cleverly built dams and aqueducts to manage water resources. It is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
